Soccer: You’ll never walk alone – National Europe Travel

If you are a fan of soccer, you will NEVER WALK ALONE.

. Chelseas squad consists of players from Czech Republic, Serbia, England, Brazil, Ghana, Spain, Nigeria, France, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, and Israel.

The World Cup is the culmination of soccer (football). In addition, top teams from each league around Europe compete in the Champions League and Europa League.

Summertime is the off-season for most soccer (football) leagues around the world. And who could forget the Olympics? Also, many clubs play friendly matches at home and abroad to drum up some international support. This summer the Euro Cup (the second largest soccer tournament) took place in Poland and Ukraine. However, league play can provoke nearly the same amount of passion and is a much more complex web of competition. European clubs buy the top players from all over the world. Because these teams are so widely popular, they generate a great deal of money and can afford to buy the best players. Club soccer lasts for nine months each year and invokes nearly the same level of loyalty and enthusiasm. Each country has its own league. In the World Cup, Euro Cup, and Olympics, countries compete against each other to see who is the best in the world. Liverpool supporters can be found from England to Thailand, from South Africa to America. But the off-season is over and the 2012-2013 season is just beginning.

Most of the soccer universe revolves around Europe. The most popular are the English Premier League, La Liga (Spain), Bundesliga (Germany), and Serie A (Italy). Club fans are concentrated in small pockets and spread out across the globe. It is a tournament full of passion and pride, but it only happens for four weeks once ever four years. Although teams fluctuate through the years, some of the consistent best teams are Barcelona, Manchester United, Bayern Mnchen, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Liverpool. However, off-season is a relative term

Best Universities in the World

They cannot provide a student with the answer to their specific question. Harvard University - Best in the World? The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) has released its annual list of the worlds top-ranking universities. These guides to the top ten universities are just that guides. That will depend on what a student wants from their university, how much support they need and the extent to which they are prepared to throw themselves wholeheartedly into their studies. For many students, an institution outside the top ten universities may well be the best choice.

The 2008 Times Higher Rankings

Details of the 2008 rankings from The Higher can be found here.

The rankings are compiled by a process of peer assessment, drawn from a rolling three-year survey of over 5,000 academics across the world (40% of the final score comes from this survey), a survey of almost 1,500 graduate recruiters (10%), with the remaining 50% coming from quantitative measures including staff-student ratio (20%), research papers citation scores (20%), proportion of staff from overseas (5%) and proportion of students from overseas (5%).

That so many universities appear in each of the various discipline lists is not surprising given that the rankings give a heavy weight to institutional rather than discipline specific factors.

An Important Caveat: Top-Ranked Doesn’t Necessarily Mean ‘Best’!

In choosing a university it is also very important to remember that universities appearing in these (or most other) rankings as being best may not offer the best student experience

Jurgen Klopp: Borussia Dortmund coach to step down

When he leaves the Bundesliga club at the end of the season it will be with memories in abundance having led Dortmund through one of the most successful periods in its history.

“I always said in that moment where I believe I am not the perfect coach anymore for this extraordinary club, I will say so,” Klopp told reporters as he confirmed his decision to step down. It is thought Manchester City sounded him out before approaching Manuel Pellegrini and, with the Chilean under fire, Klopp has once more been linked to the post.

But Klopp turned down all overtures signing a new deal in 2013 to tie him to Dortmund until 2018.

Explaining that at the time: “It’s an honor that some big clubs rate my work at Dortmund but I’m not the type who wonders whether the grass is greener elsewhere.”

This season has been a rarity for Klopp in that the team found itself on the back foot — at times at the very foot of the Bundesliga — before Klopp steadied the ship to leave it in the 10th place they currently occupy.

In Europe, Dortmund initially fared better. I have more than two left hands.”

Read: Borussia Dortmund’s Footbonaut

. The team coasted through their Champions League qualifying group only be totally outplayed over two legs by Juventus in the round of 16.

Real is seen as another potential destination for him next season while he has previously been linked to Liverpool and Arsenal. “I believe this is the right decision at the right time.

Against the riches of Bayern Munich, Klopp twice led a club that had previously been on the brink of bankruptcy to back-to-back league titles in a seven-year tenure and a Champions League final in which it agonizingly lost 2-1 to the Bavarian club.

Dortmund were twice league runners-up under his stewardship, twice won the Supercup and proved victorious in the German Cup in 2012.

But his tenure in German football will be remembered as much for his footballing successes as an approach to the game that was both passionate and personable.

While still playing the game — his entire playing days were spent in German football’s second tier with Mainz 05 — he did a diploma in sports science with his thesis on the subject of walking.

His soundbites have made him popular not just with the Dortmund faithful but the wider footballing public.

When asked about Arsene Wenger and Arsenal, he said: “He likes having the ball, playing football, passes… But it’s a silent song, yeah? I like heavy metal!”

A large-than-life figure on the touchlines — you only need to see his reaction to an official during a European game against Napoli that became an internet sensation to see that — he even had a song penned in his honor in 2011 entitled “I want to be more like Jurgen Klopp.”

His decision to call time on his Dortmund spell will inevitably see Klopp linked with Europe’s top clubs given his coaching pedigree.

“I have not had any contact with any other clubs, nor have I any plans to take a sabbatical,” said the 47-year-old German.

“I just wanted to make my decision known now so that the club can plan for the future.”

He might have become a cultural phenomenon, but Klopp became a footballing phenomenon too.

He landed the role at Dortmund originally after a successful spell in management for Mainz, in which he got it into the Bundesliga albeit briefly, on a duel approach of blooding young players but playing an exciting, attacking brand of football.

Dortmund’s decision was rewarded with a Bundesliga title in 2011 followed by a successful defense the following season — winning a league record 25 matches and ending the campaign with 81 points, the greatest total at that time.

The following two seasons ended with a runners-up spot in the league but a remarkable run to the Champions League final in 2013.

Initially given little hope of proceeding from a “Group of Death” that included Real Madrid, Manchester City and Ajax, Dortmund did not lose a match in its group and ousted Jose Mourinho’s Real in the semifinal.

But Dortmund ultimately lost 2-1 to Bayern in the final courtesy of a winner by Arjen Robben two minutes from time.

His success on a relatively meager budget brought the attention of a whole host of clubs. Klopp, though, has yet to declare his hand.

As a manager, he has repeatedly been quick to downplay his role in Dortmund’s strong domestic and European showing, instead being self-deprecating to a tee of his abilities both on and off the field of play.

Of his DIY skills, he once said: “You’d be waiting 30 or 40 years for me to build a table. it’s like an orchestra

Why Sir Alex Ferguson Underachieved at Manchester United

Critics of the Scottish league would say that for Jock Stein or Walter Smith to win many championships at Celtic and Rangers is down to the lack of competition in a ‘poor’ Scottish league, then one could argue that Fergie may not have had a great deal of competition too. Fergie broke this mould along with to a lesser extent Jim McLean at Dundee United. This may impress some, but if he was the manager of Ipswich Town or Sunderland and had done this, then it is an impressive record. He has let many players who did not agree with his view go. This ban was lifted in 1990 and Fergie won the Cup Winner’s Cup in 1991 at the first time of asking when United beat Barcelona 2-1. He was outspent in his early years by the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid but in his later years he could attract the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo away from the European giants to play for him at Old Trafford.

This is where domestic trophies should always be discounted when we discuss the best managers. I believe he underachieved in the European Cup. However, his greatest achievement was actually ending the Old Firm dominance of Scottish Football by Celtic and Rangers. 5 FA Cups, 4 League Cups and 2 European Champions League trophies. Perhaps Fergie was coming to achieve the dominance he craved near the end of his career as from 2008-11 he reached 3 out of 4 European finals, an achievement if he had sustained earlier then he would have become the all time best.

Domestic Success

This is the foundation of Fergie’s reputation. And I’ll tell you why.

The Myth

Manchester United’s former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson is the greatest manager in the history of football. If you are unlucky and lose a few times in the big events (Jimmy White was a perennial loser in snooker’s World Championship and golfer Colin Montgomerie may have won 8 European Order of Merits but he could never win a major championship and there are 4 a season in golf) then you are a talented person or coach but you are not the best.

Modus Operandi

First of all let’s look at his methods. He has won 13 Premier League championships with United. Ironically once Cantona retired, Fergie finally gained the European success at United he craved.

Pantheon of Greats

Without question Sir Alex Ferguson is an all time great. Fergie believes in control and discipline. It is often overlooked that United outspent many rivals in the late 80s and early 90s.

Fergie took over at United in 1986 when English clubs were banned from Europe. Fergie broke his own rule. This goes for any sport. However only 2 wins in European football’s premier competition in 26 years shows he cannot be classed as the best.. His longevity at United is comparable to the likes of Brian Clough (Nottingham Forest), Matt Busby (Manchester United) and Jim McLean (Dundee United). He contested 4 European cup finals in total winning 2. Brian Clough won 2 with little Nottingham Forest! Bob Paisley won 3 European Cups in a very short spell. If we include non-British managers then Jose Mourinho has won 2 in the space of 12 years already and with different clubs (Porto and Internazionale). You have to win the big competitions. He had a financial superiority over his domestic rivals for years until Chelsea turned up in 2004 under Russian oligarch Roman Ambramovitch. Blackburn Rovers and their millionaire owner Jack Walker ‘bought success’ when they won the title in 1995. But as manager of Manchester United – “The Biggest Club in the World” then it doesn’t look so good. However he contested 8 European Cup semi finals, again winning 4. Indeed the so-called “Class of ’92″ which included Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Beckham and the Nevilles is rare in British football. He took the club from Scotland’s oil capital and won the 1983 European Cup Winner’s Cup in the Swedish city of Gothenburg against the mighty Real Madrid. Possibly the only depth of young talent to come through in bulk like that were the Busby Babes of the 1950s and the Quality Street kids of the late 60s and early 70s at Celtic.

Fergie won 2 European Cups in 22 years. However his control was found lacking during Eric Cantona’s infamous ‘kung fu’ kick at a spectator. This is perhaps a tad unfair, but when we go into Europe it does hold.

The Truth

Sir Alex, or ‘Fergie’ as he is known, is one of the greatest managers in British football, but when you consider different judging criteria he comes up short as the best of all time. This was true at Aberdeen and again at United. His trophy count outstrips them massively. Pep Guardiola won 2 with his superb Barcelona team in just 4 seasons.

Over 22 years of leading United into Europe, Fergie would have to have won 4 or 5 European Cups to merit the “Greatest Ever” tag. David Beckham, Jaap Staam, and Roy Keane are three such high-profile cases. His first final in 1999 saw United trail Bayern Munich 1-0 as the game went into injury time. So Fergie, in his 26 years at United we can remove 4 when he wasn’t allowed to be in Europe. More than 1 team from each country could now contest the big prize. The Glasgow clubs have a duopoly on Scottish titles and cups with almost 100 league titles between them in around 120 years of competition. Obviously a lot of credit has to go to the scouts and youth coaches too. So Fergie didn’t even have to win the league!

Fergie won 2 European Cups in 22 years. It is one of British sports great “What If” questions to imagine what Fergie would have achieved at Aberdeen? What would Scottish football have been like in the 1990s? And what would Manchester United, Sky Sports, and the English Premiership have been like without Fergie and his all-conquering United side?

European Failure

To be considered the very best then you have to prove it. This is an impressive success rate over a sustained period in charge of a football club. United’s goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar had went the wrong way!

Fergie’s greatest success was with Aberdeen. It could also be argued that when the European Cup was revamped to the Champions League he gained an advantage previous British and European managers never had. And 2 European Cup Winners Cup (1 with United and 1 with Aberdeen).

The 2 wins Fergie achieved were also in very dramatic circumstances and could easily have went the other way. His Aberdeen side won 3 Scottish championships, 4 Scottish cups and a league cup, all won within his 8 year spell at the manager. In 2008 in the first all English final in Moscow, Chelsea’s captain John Terry had a penalty kick to win the trophy but he slipped and hit the post. But United outspent them over the 1990s.

Fergie can also be credited with bringing through a talented stream of youth players. The number of trophies he won both at Manchester United and more impressively at Aberdeen is not debatable. However it could be argued that he had a greater competitive advantage over his rivals for a longer period than these managers due to Manchester United’s rise as a global superpower. Remarkably United scored twice in 3 minutes from David Beckham corners to pip the Germans. He knew Cantona was the best player in his team and he would do anything to keep him at the club

Despite struggling with an injury at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo is still the player to watch as the United States plays Portugal in Manaus, Brazil, later today.

Ronaldo is Portugal’s all-time leading scorer, having found the net 49 times in 112 appearances. With more than 26 million Twitter followers and 82 million Facebook fans, sports marketing research firm Repucom just named him the most marketable soccer player in the world.

The 29-year-old winger won his second FIFA Player of the Year award this season, beating out Argentine rival Lionel Messi. He and model girlfriend Irina Shayk were recently featured on the cover of Vogue magazine in Spain.
